  6.       Congratulations!  The Sportster 14,400
  7.       modem you've purchased represents
  8.       powerful, advanced design.  It offers ex
  9.       ceptional reliability, compatibility and
  10.       flexibility at all standard rates up to
  11.       14.4K bits per second (bps).  Whether
  12.       you're a seasoned modem user or have
  13.       just purchased your first modem, we're
  14.       sure it will give you excellent service.
  15.       Once you've connected your new Sportster
  16.       14,400 to your telephone line, you'll be
  17.       able to use your computer in exciting
  18.       new ways.  Some of the possibilities are
  19.       shown in the figure below.

  23. HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL

  25.       This manual is divided into two parts.
  26.       The first part is designed to aid you in
  27.       getting your modem connected and
  28.       operating as quickly as possible and to
  29.       explain all its functions.  The second
  30.       part contains summaries and other
  31.       reference information.
  32.       As you use the manual, keep the
  33.       following guidelines in mind.
  34.          ∙ The modem is shipped ready for most
  35.            dial-up applications except for its
  36.            flow control setting, which depends
  37.            on the type of communications
  38.            software and machine you're using.
  39.            After you've set up the modem and
  40.            tested its operation (Chapter 2),
  41.            review the instructions in Chapter
  42.            3, Quick Start, for brief
  43.            configuration guidelines.
  44.          ∙ Sportster 14,400 modems connect
  45.            automatically with remote modems
  46.            operating at 14.4K, 12K, 9600,
  47.            7200, 4800, 2400, 1200 or 300 bps,
  48.            as long as the remote modems
  49.            observe the standards listed under
  50.            Compatibility in Chapter 1.
